Within AIMMS an active PhD Student Council represents the AIMMS PhD students to inform the AIMMS management team and to advice the PhD coordinator on matter that affects every PhD student. Furthermore, the AIMMS PhD council is a sounding board for organisational developments within the institute concerning PhD candidates.
What do we do?
Do you sometimes feel desolated or unheard as a PhD candidate within your department or faculty? Do you have burning questions you don’t know who to contact for? We as the AIMMS PhD council are here exactly for this. You can contact the AIMMS PhD council, informing us on your issues or questions. We can answer your questions or try to get you in contact with the right people. We also make sure to map these kinds of problems and communicate pressing issues (anonymously) to the Managing Team of AIMMS. The AIMMS PhD council meets the AIMMS Managing Director (Jurgen Haanstra) every two months to discuss issues concerning PhDs, also addressing your questions and issues and thereby improving the working environment for PhD candidates.
Who are we?
During our PhD tract questions/issues will arise. In many cases, your peers will be the best help to solve these problems because they come across similar questions. Therefore, the AIMMS PhD council consists of your peer PhD students dispersed among all departments, among multiple stages of the PhD trajectory and among different nationalities to make sure that imperfections that affect many of us are detected and solved.

How to reach us?
All PhD students can reach the PhD Council by mail. To ensure discretion and privacy, the PhD council mailbox is accessible to the council members only. All issues are discussed with the managing team anonymously. Also, if any PhD student is uncomfortable discussing their issues via mail, he/she can contact a PhD council member at their location (see current AIMMS council section).
AIMMS PhD Council commitments
Within the AIMMS PhD Council, we also help to organize scientific, career-oriented, social or networking events for PhD students. Furthermore, we make suggestions to the management team on how to improve our PhD Training Program. For example, an annual introductory course for new PhD students has been initiated with the help of the PhD Council. The first edition took place in March 2019 and was a great success. Additionally, we are represented in the PhD Faculty Council to make sure we are updated on faculty wide matter. Subsequently, we try to create an AIMMS PhD Alumni network to make sure AIMMS contacts are never lost.
