AIMMS provides a complementary platform to perform molecules and medicines research at an integrated systems level. This is essential for the acquisition of an integrative fundamental understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This platform is also crucial for the discovery and development of drugs (low molecular weight compounds) and therapeutics (proteins, antibodies and other biologics), as well as the development of translational biomarkers and molecular diagnostics.
The AIMMS approach is facilitated by the vertical integration multiple scientific disciplines from three departments at VU University. Within the conventional horizontal and discipline oriented organization at VU University Amsterdam, this structure is a novelty.
The research groups involved in AIMMS belong to:
- Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences
- Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences
- Centre for Integrative Bio-informatics at both Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences
And since January 1st, 2017:
- Department of Environment and Health at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences
